Some athletes grow into their sport over time, but for Clayton High School’s Calvin Palmer, baseball has always been a part of his life. “My grandpa used to hit me and my brother baseballs all the time as kids—that’s pretty much how I got into baseball,” Palmer said. Now, standing at 5’10” and 244 pounds, he plays first base, a position where reliability and consistency are key, and he takes pride in his role on the team.
Palmer credits those closest to him for inspiring his love of the game. “My family and coaches inspired me, and they are my biggest influences,” he said. That strong support system extends to his teammates, who share a bond that goes beyond the field. “We’re one big family for sure. We get mad, but we all understand one another.”
As a first baseman, Palmer knows the importance of his position. “My role on the team is to make sure nothing gets by me and to make sure everyone doesn’t get down on themselves,” he said. While some players focus on stats or championships, Palmer’s priority is simple: “My hope for the team is for everyone to have fun.”
His training routine reflects his dedication to both fielding and hitting. “Fielding with the team and tee work for my batting to work on my swing and ball placement,” he said. He also acknowledges the challenge of roster changes each year. “Having new guys come into the team and other ones leave, but everyone is always good at something in baseball.”
For Palmer, the game is more than just a sport—it’s been a source of strength. “Baseball is what helped me through some hard times, and baseball is always there. When you have nothing, you will always have a family on the field.” That sense of belonging is reinforced by the fans. “Community support is everything. When our fans are in the stands, we try to make it a good game for them to watch. I want to do my best in front of my family and friends.”
As for the future? Palmer is keeping it simple. “I haven’t decided. I’m trying to just get the best out of this season.”
