Idabel’s Katie McClure

Katie McClure’s journey in track and field is built on years of dedication, discipline and a genuine love for competition, all of which continue to shape her success at Idabel High School.

A junior who competes in the high jump and long jump, McClure first found her way onto the track in the second grade through AAU competition. What began as an opportunity encouraged by her gymnastics coach soon turned into a lasting passion. Before transitioning fully to track, McClure was a competitive gymnast, and the foundation she built there continues to benefit her, particularly in strength, coordination and body control.

“I’ve been involved in track for a long time, but it really started because my gymnastics coach encouraged me to try it,” McClure said. “I’m glad I did because I ended up loving it.”

Her routine reflects that commitment. McClure practices four days a week after school and adds three days of strength training to improve explosiveness, a key component in both of her events. She also follows a consistent pre-meet routine that includes a final practice, proper rest and a simple morning regimen to prepare physically and mentally.

“I like to feel ready and confident before I compete,” she said. “Getting good sleep and staying relaxed really helps me.”

That balance, however, has not come without challenges. McClure is heavily involved in FFA, serving as president while also competing on multiple career development event teams. Managing both responsibilities requires careful time management and focus.

Despite a demanding schedule, she continues to excel. One of her proudest accomplishments came at the Heavener meet, where she placed first in the high jump with a personal record of 5 feet, 2 inches. The mark represented significant progress from her freshman year and reinforced her confidence.

“When things don’t go the way I want, I remind myself why I love the sport,” McClure said. “Sometimes you just have to reset and keep going.”

With the support of her coaches and teammates, McClure remains focused on her goals, including qualifying for state in both events. More than results, she values the lessons the sport provides.

“Success comes from what you do when no one is watching,” she said. “That’s what really makes the difference.”
