Junior multi-sport athlete Braylee Ward embraces the challenge of leading Battiest on both the court and the diamond.
“I play basketball and softball,” Ward said. “My positions in basketball are point guard and forward. My position in softball is third base and catcher.”
One moment from last fall remains a highlight of her career so far. “The most accomplishments I’m proud of was last year fast pitch season,” she said. “We won district champs on our home field which hadn’t been done in a while before that.”
Ward said competing year-round has shaped who she is far beyond stats and scoreboards. “The sports I play have taught and continue to teach me discipline and resilience,” she said.
In the classroom, one teacher stands out for the way she keeps students engaged. “My favorite teacher is Mrs. Estep because she makes learning fun and not just something we have to do,” Ward said. “She pushes me to think harder and take pride in my work.”
When it comes to inspiration, Ward said there are many people who influence her in different ways. “I don’t think I could pick just one person who inspires me,” she said. “Some people push me to work harder, some remind me to stay positive, and others show me how to be strong when things get difficult. Each of them has played a role in helping me grow and become a better version of myself, so it wouldn’t feel right to choose only one.”
On the court and field, one longtime teammate has made a lasting impact. “I would say Jaycie,” Ward said. “I’ve played ball with her since elementary school. She always gives it her full effort no matter how tough it gets. She stays positive and encourages everyone around her and inspires me to be a better teammate.”
Ward said representing a small school makes the experience even more meaningful. “My favorite part about representing my school as an athlete, especially at a small school, is how everyone actually knows who you are and supports you,” she said.
At the heart of her approach is a simple piece of advice she carries into every game. “The best advice I’ve ever been given is to focus on doing my best, even when things are hard, instead of worrying about what others think,” Ward said.
