Stuart’s Cody Cook – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Sam Wampler’s Freedom Ford

Senior Cody Cook has built his high school career on durability, consistency and a drive to finish what he started for Stuart baseball.

“My personal goals this season is to get my 200 hits and 250 strikeouts for my high school career,” Cook said.

He said the Bear fans can expect a group that shares a common purpose. “Our team morale is pretty good,” Cook said. “I would say we are all on the same page wanting to get the job done.”

That shared focus has shown up most on the mound and in the field. “I would say our biggest improvement so far is our pitching staff and our ability to make plays on defense,” he said. “Our defense is the biggest strength in my opinion.”

Cook, who contributes both behind the plate and on the bump, embraces that responsibility. “Catcher and pitcher,” he said of his positions.

At the plate, he studies how opponents line up against him and his teammates. “When I am reading a defense when we are hitting, I am trying to find their biggest weakness,” Cook said.

Physically, he prepares himself to handle the demands of long games and high-pressure innings. “I just take the time to stretch my legs and arm really well so I can go all game,” he said.

Mentally, Cook said he treats every outing like it could be his last. “To leave it all out there on the field and play the game like it could possibly be my last,” he said of his mindset.

The program’s expectations are clear. “Our team goal is the only goal that really matters and to make the state championship and how to get the job done,” Cook said.

For Cook, however, the impact he leaves behind goes beyond statistics and wins. “When I graduate, I want my legacy at Stuart to be a good person,” he said. “I want people to look up to me and think of me as a leader and as a good person.”

He added that the team’s chemistry has been years in the making. “A lot of outsiders might not know is most of this team has played together since we were about eight years old,” Cook said.

One moment stands out above the rest. “My favorite memory in a Stuart uniform has to be getting our first win in state in a close game over Navajo,” Cook said.

Cook’s production backs up his leadership. “Last fall my stats were — batting average .424, OBP .537. Pitching stats — ERA 2.8, 65 K. I play baseball and basketball, am apart of the FFA shooting team and I like to hunt. I will attend and play baseball at Mid-America Christian University.”
