HUGO BUFFALOES
Coach: SCOTT SCHIER
4-6
Hugo enters the 2026 season after a 4-6 campaign but with momentum from back-to-back playoff appearances under head coach Scott Schier, who is in his third year at the school and second as head coach. Schier says the Buffaloes are “coming off back to playoff appearances, looking to continue that streak and then take another step to extend the season,” and he notes they have 13 seniors expected to provide “great leadership” along with several younger contributors. That senior-heavy roster gives Hugo a strong foundation to build on.
Offensively, Hugo returns six starters and will operate from a spread gun system designed to “spread the ball around to our playmakers and make the defense defend the whole field.” Senior quarterback Jayka Santillan is the key piece after rushing 70 times for 415 yards while completing 133 of 214 passes for 1,697 yards with 17 touchdowns and just six interceptions. His primary weapons include senior receiver Kadyn Jones (25 catches, 288 yards, two touchdowns), senior wideout Ca’Marian King (11 receptions, 212 yards, one touchdown) and senior running back Ja’Mari Scroggins, who rushed 64 times for 436 yards and seven touchdowns and added 29 receptions for 374 yards and five scores. Junior linemen Zane Allen (tackle) and Andrew Raper (guard) anchor the offensive front for a unit built to distribute the ball and attack space.
Defensively, the Buffaloes bring back six starters and will use a multiple front that can toggle between 3-4 and 4-3 structures. Schier says the philosophy is to “be able to play a 3-4 and a 4-3 to match up with offenses” and to “bend but don’t break. Force them to drive the length of the field.” Senior linebacker Zaven Siniga leads the way after posting 112 tackles, 13 tackles for loss and one sack, while senior strong safety Scroggins added 59 tackles, three tackles for loss, two sacks and an interception. Senior outside linebacker Kamden Bostic contributed 40 tackles, nine tackles for loss, two sacks and two blocked punts, and senior free safety Jones recorded 38 tackles and three interceptions; up front, senior nose guard Chance Baker (17 tackles, three tackles for loss) and junior defensive tackle Tamareon Jeffers (27 tackles, six tackles for loss) round out a veteran front.
Santillan is Hugo’s VYPE Top 100 nominee, described as a “3 year starter at QB” and a “tremendous leader on and off the field” who “spins the ball really well.” Schier notes that he “takes care of the ball, has the size and speed to be a threat running as well” and “lifts the play of the other guys on the field with him,” making him the clear engine of the offense. With his production, a deep senior class and a flexible, experienced defense, Hugo is positioned not just to reach the playoffs again but to make a push deeper into November in 2026.
