Setting the tone for McAlester tennis, junior doubles player Kyli Swing takes pride in leading by example on and off the court. “I would describe my role as being a leader, I think that I bring great leadership to my team by just encouraging them in tough times and always being first to step up and set a good example,” she said.
Her proudest moment so far came when she and her doubles partner broke through on the biggest stage available to them. “One accomplishment I am most proud of is when my double’s partner and I made state out of our entire girls’ team,” Swing said. The experience cemented her belief in what hard work and belief can do for a program.
That journey has also shaped her mentally. “One thing my sport has taught me that makes me a better person is how to be more mentally strong,” she said. That mental toughness shows up in matches, in practice and in the way she handles pressure-filled points.

Much of that growth, Swing said, traces back to her longtime coach and teacher. “My favorite teacher since the ninth grade has been my coach, coach Burns,” she said. “Coach Burns has taught me so much just from the couple of years he’s been my coach by learning to be more mentally strong and him just always supporting me no matter how bad I mess up. He has always been so encouraging and willing to work with you whether it’s in the classroom or at practice he has always been willing to help.”
Her teammates also fuel her drive. “My team has so many strengths and weaknesses that when someone does something really amazing, it makes me want to do the same,” she said. One teammate stands out in particular. “I think that the teammate who has left the biggest impression on me is Erica. She has always been so kind and welcoming and no matter what. She is always looking for someone to encourage, no matter how bad of a day it is.”
Representing McAlester is a responsibility she embraces. “One of my favorite parts about representing my high school is getting to set a good example for others around watching,” Swing said.
