Hartshorne’s Kanaan Brown- Choctaw Nation Male Athlete Spotlight

Proud of his heritage and his hometown, Hartshorne student-athlete Kanaan Brown carries the Choctaw name with intention in everything he does. “I am proud to be a member of the Choctaw Nation,” Brown said. “It reminds me to work hard, respect others, and represent my family and community in a positive way.”

His identity is tied closely to his roots in southeastern Oklahoma. “Being a member of the Choctaw Nation means a lot to me,” he said. “I was born at the Talihina hospital. It’s something I’m proud of. It connects me to a strong history and culture.” That connection shapes how he approaches school, sports and relationships. “It taught me the importance of supporting the people around you and working together,” Brown said.

Key values stay at the center of his life. “Respect, hard work and staying humble,” he said. Those traits are reinforced daily by the people around him. “My friends and coaches have always been supportive,” Brown said. “They encourage me to do my best and are always there for me whether at school or sports.”

Balance comes from movement and community. “Staying active and having support for my friends and family helps me stay balanced,” he said. Culture remains a priority. “Learning about Choctaw traditions and culture is important to me,” Brown said. He also understands that others are watching. “I’m proud to represent the nation,” he said. “I hope younger students see that if you work hard and stay focused, you can achieve anything.”

Hartshorne has been the backdrop for his growth. “Going to school at Hartshorne has given me a great opportunity,” Brown said. “I’ve had supportive coaches, teachers, and teammates that have helped me grow.” Looking ahead, he wants to keep honoring his people. “I hope to represent my heritage well and continue learning more about the traditions of culture of the Choctaw Nation,” he said.

He already has the next steps in mind. “After graduation, I plan on furthering my education and reaching my goals,” Brown said. Through it all, he stays grateful. “I am thankful for the support from the Choctaw nation, my family coaches, teachers, teammates, and most of all, I’m thankful for Jesus Christ,” he said.
