Stratford’s Oliver Smithwick – Basketball Spotlight – Presented by Morton Medical & Mental Health

Basketball means more than scoring or stat lines for Stratford junior Oliver Smithwick—it’s about lifting up the peoplearound him. From the moment he steps on the court, he’s driven by the idea of helping his team rise together. As he puts it, “my personal goals would be to just make everyone around me better, get 1000 points, and I also would really like to go to state.”

The Bulldogs are focused on building trust and unity as they progress through the season. Oliver sees the growth happening daily, saying, “I think it has been alright we just need to be confident in each other, and all trust each other.” He believes their biggest asset comes from how connected the team has become. “I would say our chemistry and just believing in each other to make open shots.”

This year, Oliver is determined to lead with composure and resilience. “I would like to have a winning season and I’m going to try my best by just staying positive and not getting frustrated at my teammates in hard situations.”

At 6’4”, his versatility sets him apart. “I’m listed as a power forward, but I feel like I can play most positions when needed.” His size and mobility create unique advantages on the floor. “Because I am bigger and can also move, I look for mismatches and a lot of isolation opportunities.”

Preparation is a cornerstone of his success. “I take practice very seriously before an important game and just make sure I am healthy by eating good and make sure I’m hydrated.” His mindset on game day is simple and powerful: “my mindset would be, I am the best on the court, and just my confidence on my ability to score.”

He hopes his legacy reflects both character and talent. “I would like to be remembered as a good person on and off the court, and also just a really good basketball player.”

Oliver’s favorite parts of the journey aren’t always visible to fans. “All the behind the scenes and the fun moments we make together.”

A multi-sport athlete competing in baseball and basketball, Oliver carries averages of 17.3 points and 7.6 rebounds per game and stays involved through BPA and FCA. Looking ahead, he says, “My plans after high school would be to go to college for basketball and after graduating college, get a girlfriend, have kids and settle down somewhere in the country and just live a good and sweet life.”
