The Ada Cougars are gearing up for the 2024 baseball season with high hopes of building on last year’s success. Under the leadership of head coach Shane Coker, the Cougars advanced to the Super Regionals in 2023 before falling to Blanchard. This year, the team is focused on improving offensively while relying on a mix of senior leadership and a deep junior class to propel them forward.
“We made it to a Super Regional last season before we lost to Blanchard,” said coach Coker. “We have our two top hitters back, both seniors, and we are junior-heavy. We will have four quality arms but will have to improve offensively to repeat and flourish.”
Keith Cook’s return will be a major boost for the Cougars after he missed the basketball season due to a torn ACL. “He is expected back by week two or three of the baseball season, which opens March 1,” shared Coker. Cook’s leadership and skill set are expected to make an immediate impact.
Brock Boyles will be a vital piece on the mound and in a versatile role. “He will help us exponentially on the mound, as well as fill a utility role on the infield and behind the plate,” Coker explained.
Elvis Edward is embarking on his third consecutive season as the team’s shortstop. Coach Coker is optimistic about his potential this year. “I am looking for big things from him offensively this year,” said Coker. His consistency and experience make him a key player for the team.
JD Dugan is another player to keep an eye on as the season progresses, with the potential to play a significant role for the Cougars.
The Cougars have a strong foundation to build on, thanks to their experienced pitching staff and returning offensive firepower. However, improving at the plate will be crucial if they want to replicate or surpass last year’s success. With a schedule that begins on March 1, Ada is ready to face the challenges ahead with determination.
Led by coach Coker, the Cougars aim to make another deep postseason run while fostering the development of their younger players. This season is shaping up to be an exciting one for Ada baseball.
