Madelyn Dickerson may have only been at Wright City High School for a short time, but she’s already made her mark both on and off the softball field. Originally from Pennsylvania, where she attended a large 6A school, Madelyn found herself in a smaller, more connected community in Wright City. “Most people think going to a big school is better. The school has more money for nicer stuff. But for me, Wright City is definitely the better option,” she said. Her appreciation for the close-knit environment is evident, especially when comparing the relationships she’s built with her teachers. “Here at Wright City, the staff find time to get to know and care for the kids,” Madelyn shared.
As a junior, Madelyn excels on the softball field as a second baseman and outfielder, but her journey hasn’t been without its challenges. “Always wanting to be better, knowing there are people who don’t get the chance to play, and God gave me the ability to play,” is what motivates her. Madelyn admits that sometimes the sport can feel like a job, but she always remembers that it’s a gift, not a task.
The hard work she’s put in is undeniable, from hours of practice to honing her mental game. “You can put in all the work but without the mindset, you will never be as successful as you could be,” she said. It’s a lesson she learned from her coaches, Zach Shrik and Kevin Mainer, who helped her shift from “I can’t” to “I can and I will.”
One of Madelyn’s career highlights came during her freshman year when she earned a spot on the USSSA All-American team, playing in Florida on pro fields and taking home second place. That experience solidified her love for the game and desire to continue playing at the next level. “I would love to play college softball in any division and become a physical therapist,” she shared.
For Madelyn, representing Wright City goes beyond the field. “It means showing respect, sportsmanship and dedication both on and off the field,” she said, and with her passion and drive, she’s a true embodiment of that standard.
