Talihina’s Sarah James – Basketball Spotlight – Presented by Griff’s Ranch LLC

Some athletes shine because of their stats. Others shine because of their impact. For Talihina senior Sarah James, it’s both — but it’s her purpose-driven approach that truly sets her apart. “My personal goals for this season, being a senior, are to be a role model for younger players and to leave a legacy here at Talihina,” she said. For her, leadership isn’t optional. It’s the standard.

That tone is reflected throughout the program. “The team morale has been good, we work hard and are very dedicated,” James said. “It’s going to be a great year.” She credits the Tigers’ growth to something deeper than simple effort — a shift in togetherness. “The biggest improvement that I’ve seen this year is our team chemistry,” she explained.

With that chemistry comes a clear mission. “Some of our goals this year are to work hard every day in practice, improve team bonding and unity,” she said. “We want to be the best Talihina girls’ team.” According to James, they have the pieces to make it happen. “Our biggest strengths are our chemistry, defense, and our depth in our team.”

Standing at 6 feet tall and averaging 10.2 points and 5.4 rebounds per game, James anchors Talihina’s interior presence. “I play center and post,” she said. As for her approach, she’s intentional. “As a center player I look for who my opponent will be and what their strengths and weaknesses are.”

Preparation is everything for her. “I prepare in practice, and watch film. Plays and shots will come,” James said. When she steps on the floor, her mentality is simple and direct. “Be the best player on the court and do what the team needs me to do.” And when she graduates, she hopes her influence continues. “Be the best role model and player not only on the court but off the court as well.”

Fans may see the intensity, but James says there’s more behind the scenes. “Something that fans and outsiders may not know about our team is that we have strong chemistry and we are like one big family.”

Her favorite memory? It’s as meaningful as her mindset. “My favorite memory on a Talihina [team] would have to be able to have my mom with me and having both of my sisters with me on my last year.”

Beyond basketball, James plays softball, is active in her church — singing, playing piano, helping youth ministries — and participates in FCA and Project Rise.
