Junior catcher and pitcher Nicholas ‘Shade’ Cody approaches every inning with a simple standard: win the pitch, lead the team and honor the work that built Rattan’s tradition.
“More patient as a hitter, to be the best teammate, player, and leader I can be,” Cody said of his personal goals this season.
He said the Rams carry a clear sense of purpose into 2026. “Very optimistic, determined, and excited to compete for a state title,” Cody said of the team’s morale.
That mindset, he added, is backed by daily commitment. “Disciplined work ethic,” he said, describing the biggest improvement he has seen from the group.
The expectations inside the program are direct and demanding. “To win a state championship,” Cody said of the team’s main goal. “By taking no days off.”
Cody believes one intangible gives Rattan a significant edge. “Team chemistry,” he said.

On the field, his versatility makes him a cornerstone in several key spots. “Catcher, pitcher, and third base,” Cody said of the positions he plays.
To handle games with high volume on both sides of the ball, Cody focuses heavily on his conditioning. “Staying in great shape and taking care of my body,” he said.
His mentality when the cleats hit the dirt stays the same, no matter the stage. “WIN; I’m focused on doing my best every pitch,” Cody said.
Long term, Cody wants his impact to be defined by more than stats and trophies. “I want to be remembered by what kind of person I am and not by how good of a player I may or may not be,” he said.
He also knows Rattan’s sustained success hasn’t happened by accident. “The amount of work it takes to continue to make the state tournament,” Cody said when asked what outsiders may not know. “Our expectation is to make it to the state tournament every year. I have competed in five high school baseball seasons, and we have made the state tournament every time!”
One moment still stands above the rest. “Winning the state championship!” he said of his favorite memory in a Rattan uniform.
“Stats – 495 average, 1.000 slugging percentage, 10 home runs, 16 2B, 41 RBIs. I am involved in National Honor Society, FCA, and very active in First Baptist Church Youth Group,” he said. His future plan is clear: “To play college baseball!”
