Jontaa Jett-Mom of the Month
If you want some tips on how to organize and help run a youth sports organization, you might look up Jontaa Jett in Broken Bow. She’s currently the secretary of the Broken Bow High School Quarterback Club and coordinates the Adopt A Savage program, a part of the booster club that works with local businesses and organizations to feed the team or make goodie baskets for both football and basketball. She has also volunteered for years with the Savage Elite Little League football program and helped organize the Broken Bow youth basketball little league.
“I find all of this to be very rewarding to be able to make a difference in people’s lives,” said Jett. “Because a lot of parents aren’t able to volunteer because of work schedules, it allows me the opportunity to step in and help when others can’t and this way I get to know the kids and have some fun with them.”
Jontaa has also had a personal stake in working as a booter volunteer, first with her nephew Alaska Jett and now with her son Greydon Howell who is a sophomore at Broken Bow High. A Broken Bow native, Jett played basketball and ran track for the Savages when she was in high school and says she has seen community spirit ebb and flow over the years.
“When I was in school Broken Bow football was huge but it kind of deteriorated some over the years. But this year there’s a lot of renewed excitement in town about football. I sell banners to area businesses and this year they’re calling me to get involved which hasn’t happened in a long time, so I love it.”
So what advice would she have to prospective athletic parents about getting involved as a volunteer?
“I’d say just do it. A lot of times these kids not only need to get fed but also need a mother figure sometimes to guide them along the way. It’s an opportunity for you to impact those kids lives.”
