OUTLOOK

The Hugo Buffaloes enter the 2025-2026 season with confidence and experience, returning nearly their entire roster from last year. With only one senior departed, longtime head coach Darnell Shanklin believes his team is primed to take the next step.

“I have a team that only graduated one senior and return players that have a lot of minutes in our system,” said Shanklin. “We have a very difficult schedule, but we expect to be ready when the playoffs start.”

The Buffaloes bring back a strong senior class led by Quincy Shelton (6-2, G, Sr.), a dynamic athlete and four-year varsity veteran. Shelton, who has already committed to play Division I football, has been a cornerstone of Hugo basketball since his freshman year. “Quincy has been playing varsity since his freshman year which is rare at Hugo,” Shanklin said. “He’s an outstanding athlete.”

Joining Shelton in the senior class is Juwan Johnson (6-4, F), a physical presence in the paint who provides size and rebounding on both ends of the floor. Mahki Edwards (5-9, G) and Lorenzo King (5-10, G) bring speed and control to the backcourt, while Malakhai Edwards (6-3, F) adds length and defensive versatility. Rounding out the senior group is Jakabrian Tarver (5-9, G), another experienced guard who gives Hugo depth and quickness on the perimeter.

One of the most promising young players on the roster is sophomore Payton McClain, who Shanklin describes as the total package both on and off the court. “Payton is a really good shooter and an even better kid,” he said. “He’s a hard worker that will come in early in the morning to get in extra shooting. He’s an A student and represents Hugo the right way.”

Also gaining recognition within the program is sophomore Isaiah Wiggins, an FFA student and athlete whose commitment stands out. “Just the amount of time and effort that it takes to play basketball and be in FFA requires time management and dedication,” said Shanklin.

With experience, leadership, and a strong work ethic, the Hugo Buffaloes are ready to make their mark this season.
