From a young age, Shannon Stanford knew she wanted to follow in her sister’s footsteps. “I’ve been playing softball since I was about five. I got started into softball by watching my sister play and going to all of her games and decided I wanted to do that too,” she recalled. Now, as a standout player for Wilburton High School, Shannon’s passion for the game is evident in her dedication both on and off the field.
Shannon’s family has been central to her development as an athlete. “My sister inspired me, she always worked hard, no matter if she was tired or had other things to do, she would always find time to go to the fields and do something extra.” That work ethic, along with the constant encouragement from her parents, has driven her to succeed. “My biggest influences are my parents for always pushing me to do my best and teaching me that hard work will get you a long way.”
As a pitcher, Shannon puts in extra hours to hone her craft. “I spend time at the field with my dad who catches me, I take pitching lessons, and I play travel ball which prepares me for the season,” she explained. This dedication paid off in a big way last year when she set her school’s strikeout record as a freshman. “Seeing all of the hard work and time I’ve spent practicing being paid off was a memorable moment for me.”
For the 2024 season, Shannon’s goals are clear: “My goal for the 2024 season is to make it further in regionals this year.” She believes team chemistry is a crucial part of their success, noting, “Team chemistry this season has been pretty good. I think we all get along well, and we all talk each other up whenever a teammate needs it.”
Looking ahead, Shannon dreams of playing college softball and pursuing a career in the medical field. “I plan to be playing softball. I’m not sure where at yet, but I do know I want to play.”
Supported by her family and motivated by her love for the game, Shannon Stanford continues to represent the Wilburton Diggers with pride.
