Wilburton’s Roman Brinlee – Baseball Spotlight – Presented by Bovem Carriers

Roman Brinlee’s approach to his first high school baseball season is rooted in something bigger than statistics.

“I want to be the best teammate and contributor to my team this season,” Brinlee said.

The Wilburton freshman enters the spring with confidence in the group around him. “This past summer, the team morale
was good. We were up every game this summer and we’re hoping to keep it that way as the season starts,” he said.

As one of the newer varsity players, Brinlee is still learning the dynamic of this year’s roster. “This will be my first season with this group of young men, so will be looking forward to seeing our improvements,” he said.

The team’s expectations are clear. “Making it through playoffs to State,” Brinlee said. “It is our job to make sure we are working hard every minute of every practice to make this happen.”

He believes the Diggers have the tools to compete deep into the postseason. “Speed and agility,” he said. “We are very talented in all aspects of the game.”

Versatility is one of Brinlee’s strengths. “I can and have played second baseman, short stop, pitcher and center fielder,” he said.

At the plate, he relies on awareness. “I take a second to see where everyone on the field is playing and then find gap and attack it,” Brinlee said.

Preparation, he said, is an everyday commitment. “Every game requires hits and amazing plays, but I prepare myself for every game by focusing and working hard in every practice, every day,” he said.

His competitive mindset shows once he steps between the lines. “To win every aspect of the game-hitting, fielding, and the game within the game,” Brinlee said.

Though his high school baseball career is just beginning, he already understands how h wants to be remembered. “I
want my legacy to be known for my teamwork, my athleticism, and my loyalty,” he said.

Brinlee also points to an intangible that defines Wilburton baseball. “We have a lot of heart as a team,” he said.

Before each game, one song sets the tone. “One by Metallica, every game,” he said.

Brinlee competes in football, basketball, baseball, golf, track and powerlifting. He is involved in FCS and hopes to “play
sports at the next level, while achieving my college degree.”
