Wilburton Diggers Cheer Team
With unwavering spirit and dedication, the Wilburton Diggers cheer team is prepared to bring enthusiasm and support to each game and rally this season. “We want to be there to support our teams and other groups in our school,” said head coach Brittany Grossnicklaus. “Win or lose, we show up to cheer on our teams. We want to lead by example to build unity in our school system, creating one family.” Coach Grossnicklaus and the team are committed to fostering school pride and bringing together students, faculty, and fans with their performances.
Senior Starr Meaders stands out as a remarkable leader within the team. “She always has a smile on her face and is willing to tackle anything,” said Grossnicklaus. “When coaches need something, she’s the first to step up and offer help, and she encourages and supports the other girls.” Starr’s leadership and positive energy make her an invaluable asset to the Diggers cheer squad.
This summer, the team held a home camp from July 9-11, inviting J & C Camps to work with the girls. “They taught our girls a dance, several cheers, and worked with them on stunting,” explained Grossnicklaus. “With several first-time cheerleaders, this individualized attention was vital, and we saw improvements each day.”
To kick off the football season, the Diggers hosted their annual Ice Cream Social, organized numerous pep rallies, and practiced tirelessly. “Our girls learn about 50 cheers, chants, and dances for football season alone,” Grossnicklaus stated. In addition to Game Day routine preparation, the team dedicated countless hours to practice. After the competition season, they shifted focus to basketball season, learning stomps and cheers specific to those games.
A recent VYPE poll became a bonding experience for the Diggers, as the girls reached out to friends, family, and the community for support. This collaborative effort reinforced team spirit and cohesion, with each member working toward a common goal. Grossnicklaus emphasizes the importance of community involvement, stating, “It was a good bonding experience.”
The Diggers are looking forward to competing in the Game Day Regionals (Class 3A) in Stroud on Nov. 9. Competing alongside 33 other schools, they’ll perform a band chant, cheer, and fight song with the hopes of making it to the state competition on Nov. 16.
Grossnicklaus is excited to watch the team grow and develop, both as individuals and as a squad. “This is a wonderful group of young ladies, and we are honored to be their coaches.”
With coach Grossnicklaus and assistant coach Denise Hale at the helm, the Wilburton Diggers cheer team is primed for an exciting and rewarding season, ready to inspire and uplift their school and community.
