Red Oak basketball has built its reputation on grit, experience, and a standard that never lowers—and senior Jayla King is one of the players driving that standard every single day. With this being her final run in a Lady Eagle uniform, she’s focused on making every moment count. “Some of my personal goals this season are to improve every day, have great leadership, develop new skills, and set good examples for the younger girls.”
This winter brings new energy with new leadership on the sidelines. “Exciting as we have new coaches, coach Fields and coach Davis,” Jayla says. The returning seniors have matched that excitement with urgency. “We have several returning seniors who are very focused and motivated to do whatever it takes as we make one last attempt for the gold ball.”
Growth has been impossible to miss. “Leadership and the work ethic of wanting to do something that has never been done in Red Oak girls basketball winning a State Championship,” she shares.
Experience ties everything together. “The experience and playing time we have had together over the past few years is our biggest strength.” Jayla contributes all over the floor, saying she plays “Guard and forward.”
Her game approach is sharp and intentional. When reading defenses, she focuses on “Finding the mismatch and taking advantage of it.”
The mental side is equally important. “Be the best I can be and play hard from tipoff to the final buzzer. I want to lead my teammates with encouragement and by my effort.”
Her vision for life after high school extends far beyond the court: “I want my legacy to be that I lift others up, a leader and team player. Someone who was competitive, wanting to guard the best player.”
Faith remains one of the team’s foundations. “Our team is big on faith and God’s word. Before and after each game, we pray.”
Her favorite memory? “Winning area championship and making it to the state tournament sophomore year… my brother played on the boys’ team, and they also made it to the state tournament.”
Jayla’s plans after high school are to attend Eastern Oklahoma State College and become a registered nurse.
