McAlester’s Rodney Washington
Rodney Washington has earned national attention for his athletic achievements, but the McAlester High School standout believes the lessons learned through sports matter just as much as the recognition that comes with them.
Entering his junior year, Washington competes in both football and basketball. Among his accomplishments, he is most proud of being ranked in ESPN’s Top 60 national basketball rankings, a distinction that places him among some of the country’s top young players.
While accolades are rewarding, Washington says athletics have taught him valuable life skills that extend well beyond competition.
“Sports have taught me how to work well as a team with others,” Washington said. “They’ve taught me how to network and build relationships with people I’ve known my whole life to people I’ve met along the way. They’ve taught me to be disciplined, to work hard for what I want and integrity. All of those things translate to not only sports but life as well.”
Washington credits several educators and coaches for helping shape the person he is becoming. Among those who have made a lasting impact are Mrs. Morrison, Coach Dawkins and Mrs. Alford, his Spanish teacher.
“Mrs. Alford made me realize when you go through adversity for however long it’s important how you treat people,” Washington said. “She made me realize you can’t hold grudges forever.”
The relationships he has built with teammates are equally meaningful. Having spent years playing alongside many of them, Washington values the bonds formed through competition and shared experiences.
“I love all of my teammates,” he said. “We have all grown from kids to young men and played side by side. They’ve all made an impression on my life in some way.”
Washington also takes pride in representing his hometown of McAlester. He enjoys being surrounded by family and friends and appreciates the history of past athletes whose accomplishments are displayed throughout the school’s gymnasium.
The guidance of his parents continues to influence him daily. His mother reminds him to stay grounded and put God first, while his father encourages him to “show up and show out” before every game.
He also expressed gratitude to his parents for their unwavering support, crediting them for helping make his athletic journey possible. When he’s not competing, Washington enjoys spending time outdoors and fishing whenever he gets the opportunity.
