McAlester’s Fyfer Mitchell – Football Spotlight – Presented by Jim Jeffreys Shelter Insurance

Fyfer Mitchell, a football player from McAlester School, has been immersed in the sport since third grade, inspired by his father who coached him. “I started playing football in third grade because my dad was coaching me and I’ve never known any different,” Fyfer shared. Fyfer’s father remains his biggest inspiration. “My dad was my biggest inspiration to play football and still is to this day. I strive to be the best version of myself and be a positive reflection of him and my mom every day.”

The chemistry within the McAlester football team is at an all-time high. “The team’s chemistry is the best it has been in years. We all genuinely get along with each other and have fun doing the things that aren’t fun on the football field.”

Fyfer plays a pivotal role as the strong-side linebacker. “My role is the ‘Sam’ linebacker, so my main job is to call the defense plays, but a lot more responsibility falls under that title. I prepare mentally by studying more film than anyone else, as well as training hard day in and day out. I pride myself on knowing where everyone should be on defense and their assignments,” he explained, emphasizing his dedication and leadership.

A highlight from last season was their underdog victory. “My most memorable moment from last season was when we beat the top 3A team in Arkansas in week two. It was so memorable not just because i had a great game but just because we were picked to lose by so much.”

Looking ahead, Fyfer has ambitious plans. “I plan to attend college to play football and acquire a degree in sports medicine that allows me to stay in the world of football for as long as I like, even after I’m done playing,” he said.

Grateful for the support he’s received, Fyfer acknowledged key figures. “I would like to thank my linebacker coach, Kevin Harmon, for always letting me know when I mess up but always picking me up right after. Thank you to my head coach, Forrest Mazey, for giving me a chance when he didn’t have to and always believing that I could become what I wanted to be.”
