Brayden Bumphus, a senior at McAlester High School, is leaving a lasting legacy on the football field and in the weight room. As he wraps up his final season, Brayden reflects on the journey that has shaped him into the standout athlete he is today.
Brayden’s versatility on the field is remarkable, playing as a running back, strong safety and an all-around athlete. His motivation comes from profound sources: “God and my family.”
A key influence in Brayden’s life is his best friend, Fyfer Mitchell. “My best friend, Fyfer, influences me. He pushes me to be better at everything I do,” Brayden said, highlighting the importance of their supportive friendship. Additionally, his agriculture teacher, Mr. Finch, has made a significant impact. “Mr. Finch impacted my life by always telling me to keep a smile on my face,” Brayden recalled, a reminder to stay positive through all challenges.
Brayden’s dedication to football and powerlifting involves immense “sacrifice and time.” These two words encapsulate the commitment required to excel in both sports. Reflecting on his high school football career, Brayden fondly remembers a pivotal moment: “The interception late in the game versus Bishop McGuinness.” This play showcased his athleticism, his ability to perform under pressure and just so happened to punch McAlester’s ticket to the state championship in 2022.
For Brayden, football is about more than just the sport. “It’s more than just athletics: it’s a brotherhood, a family, an unbreakable bond,” he said, illustrating the deep connections forged with his teammates.
As he looks back, Brayden cherishes the memories made and the ultimate goal his team strives for: “Many more memories and the ultimate goal, a state championship.” His journey through McAlester High School football is a testament to hard work, resilience, and the power of a supportive community.
