The Canadian Cougars cheer program continues to shine, built on a foundation of teamwork, dedication, and school spirit. Head coach Melinda Miller said the program emphasizes much more than cheering from the sidelines.
“The Canadian Cheer program emphasizes inclusivity, teamwork, athletic excellence, and sportsmanship,” Miller said. “The program supports a positive, disciplined, and supportive environment where athletes are expected to balance competition with fun and personal achievement.”
This year’s squad is unique, not only for its size but for the way it has bonded so quickly. “This year’s cheer team stands out for their exceptional work ethic and dedication,” Miller said. “Each member consistently demonstrates commitment, pushing themselves to improve at every practice. Our captains play a crucial role, holding the team accountable and maintaining a culture of responsibility and respect.”
The Cougars are led by captain Ashton Miller and co-captains Issabelle Harris and Elizabeth Shaffer, who bring energy and accountability to the group. “Ashton, Issabelle, and Elizabeth positively impact the group by consistently showing up, modeling a great attitude, and holding both themselves and the team accountable,” Miller said.
Even though most of the team is new, the group has blended well. “With only two returning high school cheerleaders and one member moving up from junior high, the majority of our team is new this year. Despite this, the group has quickly formed strong bonds,” Miller said. “Their positive attitudes and willingness to learn have created a welcoming, unified environment where everyone feels valued.”

Practices reflect that culture of discipline and teamwork. “Our practices begin with the entire team stretching together to prevent injuries and promote flexibility,” Miller said. “Next, we warm up our stunts, focusing on proper technique and safety. We then review and practice cheers we’ve already learned, ensuring everyone is confident and in sync.”
The team’s goals go beyond routines and game nights. “Our team’s goals for this year focus on two main areas,” Miller said. “First, the girls are eager to expand their skills by learning more stunts and mastering new techniques. Second, we aim to boost school spirit by getting more students and staff involved in activities and events.”
That school spirit will be on display during one of the highlights of the season. “The team is especially excited about the opportunity to cheer at the OU football game during halftime,” Miller said. “This event is a major highlight for the girls, giving them a chance to perform on a big stage.”
For Miller, the most rewarding part of this season has been watching the cheerleaders grow. “Through cheerleading, I’ve seen my athletes grow significantly both as individuals and as teammates,” she said. “The biggest lesson I hope they take away is the importance of teamwork and perseverance.”
