At Hugo High School, Carter Fechter is building confidence on the tennis court with a steady approach and a growing commitment to improvement. What began as a casual introduction to the sport has developed into a consistent part of his athletic life.
“Two people I knew played tennis and I had played before, so I thought I’d give it a shot,” Fechter said.
Since then, Fechter has continued to develop his game while embracing the opportunity to contribute to his team. As a freshman, he is focused not only on personal growth but also on helping strengthen the program as a whole.
“I’m in ninth grade and I want to give Hugo a better name and a better tennis program,” he said.
Fechter has found comfort in doubles play, where communication and teamwork help shape the pace of competition. The format allows him to stay composed and play with a more relaxed mindset.
“I primarily play doubles; it gives me less sense of urgency and helps me stay more mellow,” he said.
That calm presence carries into his strengths on the court, especially when reacting to fast or difficult shots. Fechter takes pride in his ability to stay engaged during unpredictable points.
“I take pride in returning high spikes that go over everyone’s heads,” he said.
Improvement has been a consistent focus throughout the season, especially in refining technique and building mental discipline. He continues to work toward greater confidence, particularly in his backhand and overall mentality.
“I’ve worked my hardest this year to get a better backhand and better on-court mentality,” he said.
His preparation routine is simple but intentional. Before matches, he uses music and repetition to settle into a focused mindset.
“Before a big match I put on headphones, listen to music, and sit and mellow out,” he said. “I always listen to the same part of my playlist.”
Once competition begins, Fechter focuses on staying composed regardless of momentum shifts.
“I try not to get in my head no matter how the match is going,” he said.
He also credits key influences in his development as both a player and individual.
“Sam Perez has had the most impact on me as a tennis player… but Coach Shanklin has had the most impact on me as an athlete and individual. Also, my dad for always pushing me to be my best,” he said.
As the season continues, Fechter remains focused on steady progress and strong tournament finishes.
