VYPE Magazine’s Rebekah McIntosh, sat down with Dr. Rodriguez to learn more about his story into sports medicine and his advice for staying in the game—at any age.

VYPE: What inspired you to specialize in sports medicine?

Dr. Rodriguez: Was luckily able to avoid major injury through my sports career, but did develop some elbow problems my freshman year of high school that required some treatment. This is what first got me interested in the field.

VYPE: What sports or athletic teams have you worked with in the past?

Dr. Rodriguez: Texas Tech University, Lubbock Christian University, Magnolia ISD, Corpus Christi ISD and Coastal Bend College

VYPE: What are some of the latest advancements in sports medicine that you incorporate into your practice?

Dr. Rodriguez: Once of the newer advances we are currently doing is PRP (platelet rich plasma) where we inject part of a patient’s own blood to help promote healing

I also incorporate ultrasound to help guide/place injections in the optimal site to facilitate the best outcomes

VYPE: How do you help athletes prevent injuries while maximizing performance?

Dr. Rodriguez: Unfortunately, most of the time, I don’t see the athlete until they start having problems, but will often talk about how to prevent recurrence of injury we are treating as well as how we can modify some of their activities to prevent other things down the road. I will say for the most part, sleep and nutrition (especially protein) are 2 very underrated areas that are often ignored by younger patients.

VYPE: What’s a piece of advice you’d tellANY high school athlete?

Dr. Rodriguez: As a physician, I would say don’t ignore chronic pains that your having. “Soreness” is ok after certain workouts and can last for a few days, anything lasting longer than 5-7 days is a sign that something else is going on and its always easier to address earlier on.

As a former collegiate athlete and all conference player, I would say, keep working at what your doing. Someone out there is always doing more. When you get to college, everyone there will be the “best player” from their high school/district/conference.

VYPE: How has the Curry Orthopedics team impacted you?

Dr. Rodriguez: Everyone here at Curry Orthopedics has been so friendly and helpful, from Dr. Curry and Brian, to the front desk, PT staff, administration and the clinical staff.

VYPE: What motivated you to move to Ada, Oklahoma from Texas?!

Dr. Rodriguez: I’ve known Dr. Curry since med school and have visited the area several times over the last few years. It became apparent that this area and patient population could benefit from the services that I provide

With Dr. Rodriguez, Curry Orthopedics now offers sports medicine treatments through ultrasound-guided injections, providing patients with the full spectrum of orthopedic care—from non-surgical solutions to advanced surgical treatments.
