Sasakwa’s Sherman Mitchell
As Sherman Mitchell prepares for his senior year at Sasakwa High School, he is focused on making the most of every opportunity in his final season of high school athletics.
A three-sport athlete competing in football, basketball and baseball, Mitchell has built his athletic career around hard work, perseverance and a commitment to constant improvement. While he has enjoyed many memorable moments throughout his time as a Viking, one football season stands above the rest.
“My favorite memory is how far we made it in football,” Mitchell said.

That playoff run reinforced lessons Mitchell has learned through years of competition. More than wins and losses, sports have shaped the way he approaches challenges both on and off the field.
“The sport I play taught me to be disciplined, and it taught me to never give up on something you love,” Mitchell said.
As he enters his final year of high school sports, Mitchell carries a mindset that has helped him continue developing as both an athlete and a student. A quote that has become especially meaningful to him is, “Progress is more important than perfection.”
“It influenced me to work hard at everything I do,” Mitchell said.
Mitchell credits several coaches and mentors for helping him reach this point. Among them is teacher and coach Mr. Berryhill, whose encouragement and expectations have made a lasting impact.
“The biggest impact he has made on me is his determination for me to get better,” Mitchell said.

He also appreciates the support of his teammates, especially Titus Collins, whom he describes as both a great teammate and a great person.
Away from competition, Mitchell enjoys spending time in the Sasakwa gym, his favorite place in town. Whether preparing for the next season or sharpening his skills, he sees the gym as a place where growth happens through consistent effort.
Mitchell has also looked for ways to give back to his community. He helped serve food catered to the Boys & Girls Club and participated with the football team in a community cleanup project.
With his senior year ahead, Mitchell hopes to continue building on the progress that has defined his journey.
