McKayla Harjo’s passion for basketball runs deep, shaped by her upbringing in a family of athletes. “I started playing basketball when I was in kindergarten,” she shared, reflecting on her early introduction to the sport. However, it was when she reached fifth grade and began playing up with older girls that the true challenge and drive began. “Being small meant you always had to work harder. Coming into high school, I wasn’t scared of playing against bigger girls. I just knew I had to play harder and put more effort in.”
A standout player for Sasakwa High School, McKayla credits her older siblings and cousins as major sources of inspiration. “They all have so much passion for the game that they always push me and advise me to be a better player.” Their support has helped McKayla become a leader on the team. As a senior, she embraces the responsibility of guiding the underclassmen. “My role is being a leader on and off the court. It’s my job to encourage and uplift the underclassmen during games and practice and set a good example.”
This season, McKayla’s focus is clear: “To get through the season with no injuries and make it to the big house my last year!” In preparation, she combines intense practices with conditioning drills to stay in top shape. “A typical week usually involves a mix of practices, games, and workouts. We hit the gym for drills, to work on plays, get shots up, and mostly to do different things with conditioning to stay in shape.”
One of the most challenging moments in McKayla’s career came during her junior year when the team only had five players. Despite the adversity, she and her teammates pushed through, making it to the area with only six players. “We never let that stop us from playing a game we loved.”
Looking ahead, McKayla hopes to continue influencing the game. “In sports, hopefully, coaching the younger kids. Outside of that, making money, traveling, and providing for my family.” Her hard work, resilience, and leadership will undoubtedly continue to inspire others.
