Some athletes play for fun, some for pride—but for Joshua Jones, it’s about building a legacy. The 6’1” sophomore from Sasakwa High School is determined to etch his name among the greats. “To be a state champion and being one of the best players to ever come from Sasakwa,” Joshua said of his ultimate goal. With his talent, drive, and team-first mentality, he’s well on his way.
Joshua is a versatile athlete who contributes on both ends of the court, averaging 19 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 steals per game while playing shooting guard and small forward. His approach to the game is all about adaptability. “To see what the defense is giving me and not giving me, such as, they are giving me a jump shot, driving to the paint, or passing to my teammate,” he explained. That ability to read the floor and make quick decisions is part of what makes him a leader for the Vikings.
The Sasakwa team enters this season with renewed focus and purpose. “We are more focused and hungrier after how we ended last season,” Joshua said. “Since everyone is a year older, we feel we are more mature than last year.” Their motivation is clear: “Our team’s goals are to win the conference and make it to the State Tournament. Being locked in at practice, we worked all summer, committed to each other, and pushing each other every day.”
Their biggest asset? Athleticism and speed. “I think our biggest strength is how fast and athletic we are,” Joshua said. That explosiveness gives Sasakwa an edge in transition and allows them to pressure opponents on defense.
For Joshua, preparation is key. “I try to get plenty of rest the night before, and before the game I go through my stretch routine. I’ve added strength and conditioning to my workouts to prepare me for whatever my team needs,” he said. That mindset— “doing whatever it takes to win”—is what sets him apart.
Off the court, Joshua stays active year-round, also competing in baseball, cross country, and golf. His favorite basketball memory so far? “Hitting a game winner against Weleetka last season.”
