Wilburton’s Hunter James – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by A-OK Railroad

Hunter James has a simple focus heading into his senior season at Wilburton High School.

“To help lead by team to state,” James said.

The Diggers’ expectations are clear, and so is the energy around the program. “The team morale has been amazing; everyone is ready to go,” he said.

James points to chemistry as a major reason for optimism. “Our ability to work together as a team,” he said, describing the biggest improvement he has seen.

That unity feeds into a shared objective. “Our biggest goal to win state,” James said. “I have been working out every day to get stronger and faster, continuing by hitting lessons.”

He believes the roster is aligned in its purpose. “The team’s biggest strength is that we all have one goal in mind, and we are working hard to be able to achieve it,” James said.

A utility player, James fills whatever role is needed. “I play second base, first base, outfield and pitch,” he said.

At the plate, his approach is direct. “I look for a gap that I am going to drive the ball through,” James said.

Preparation, he added, goes beyond physical reps. “I focus on the game plan and what I can do to better assist my team,” he said.

Once he steps between the lines, the standard is high. “My mindset is to play perfectly,” James said.

James’ legacy goals reflect both resilience and selflessness. “I want my legacy to be defined by my willingness to do whatever the team needed to win, whether it was moving from the middle infield to the grass or coming back from a broken pinky in the 2025 season to help lead my team to Regional Runners Up and earning the Mr. Clutch Hitter Award,” he said. “I want the younger guys to remember that no role is too small, and no setback is too big when you’re playing for the Diggers.”

He believes much of the team’s identity happens out of sight. “The work these guys put in on and off the field, the winner’s mentality,” James said.

Before first pitch, one song sets the tone. “Closure by Chevelle,” he said.

From 2023 through 2025, James posted a .244 batting average with a .427 on-base percentage and 31 hits in 60 games. He plans to attend OSU IT for heating and air.
