For the first time in recent years, the Wilburton cheer squad will take on a new challenge as they compete at Regional Competition in September — a major milestone for a team filled with energy, dedication, and growing talent under head coach Brittany Grossnicklaus.
“We have been competing at Game Day Regionals, but with the number of tumblers we have this year, we want to give the other competition a try,” Grossnicklaus said.
With 18 on the roster, Grossnicklaus said the team is eager to build on their strengths and continue developing as a unit. “We have a squad of 18 talented young ladies who are eager to learn,” she said. “We will be attending camp in Hot Springs in July and are looking forward to developing our squad.”
The Diggers will kick off their year with several key events that highlight their school spirit and community involvement. “In addition to preparing for competition, we are in the process of trying to teach all of our cheers and band dances in order to be ready for football season,” said Grossnicklaus. “In August, we will host the annual Ice Cream Social to officially kick off the season. Then, we will go right in to planning an All-School Pep Assembly for students in grades Pre-K through 12. We will cheer the Diggers on throughout football season and then head straight into basketball season.” Leading the way for Wilburton is senior Claire Lowe. “Claire is a four-year senior and is a great leader,” Grossnicklaus said. “She is a great flyer and is also great at demonstrating cheers and dances in practice. We are looking forward to great things from her as a senior.” Freshman Gracie Grossnicklaus has already shown tremendous promise. “Gracie is a freshman newcomer,” said the coach. “We are looking forward to great things from her as she starts her career on the varsity squad. We think she is going to shine as a Digger cheerleader.”
Another rising name to know is freshman Scarlett Clark. “Scarlett is a freshman cheerleader who will do anything that is asked of her,” Grossnicklaus said. “She can fly or base and has amazing jumps. She is an all-around athlete, and we look forward to watching her cheer for the Diggers.”
Senior Cambree Hale stands out for her leadership and dedication. “Cambree is a four-year senior cheerleader on our squad,” said Grossnicklaus. “She has come a long way since making the squad as a freshman with no cheer experience. She is always willing to help the coaches and spends a lot of time helping teachers at the high school. We know if we need something done, we can count on her.”
With leadership from seniors like Lowe and Hale and fresh talent in Clark and Grossnicklaus, the Wilburton cheer team is set for an exciting and historic season ahead — one built on teamwork, determination, and school pride.
