McAlester’s Parker Cochran – Cross Country Spotlight – Presented by Fenton Nissan
For McAlester freshman Parker Cochran, cross country isn’t just about racing—it’s about growth. “Some of my personal goals for this season are to fix my running posture,” Cochran said, setting the tone for how she approaches the sport with a mindset of constant improvement.
That same energy is shared by her teammates, who have created an uplifting environment. “This year, our team has expanded so much, so our team morale is very high,” she said. “Our team has improved a lot in our race times and confidence in each other.”
The Lady Buffs are eyeing big things this fall. “The team’s goal this year is to make it and place in regionals,” Cochran said. Helping them get there are new opportunities to prepare in different ways. “Our team’s biggest strength is we have new trails in McAlester that are helping us train in different levels.”
Though only a freshman, Cochran has embraced leadership. “Our girls’ team is really young so even though I am a freshman, I am one of the older girls. I play a role in being a leader and encouraging them,” she said.
Her approach to competition is all about strategy. “When looking or reviewing a course, I look for pick up points for my speed and pace,” she explained. Preparation is just as important as execution. “My team focuses on plyometrics, stretching and knowing all the hard work we put in at the Glen Stone Trails.”
Cochran’s mindset keeps her steady and motivated. “My mindset is not all about winning but pushing myself to work harder and better than last race,” she said. That drive is shaping the legacy she hopes to leave behind. “I want my legacy to be that I always shows up and puts in all my effort in whatever sport I’m playing.”
Cross country at McAlester is about more than competition, too. “McAlester Cross Country puts in camps for younger kids to get involved with running,” she said. Her favorite memory proves how much support fuels her journey: “Being the only girl my seventh and eighth grade year, having the whole high school and boys team cheer for me at the finish line was one of my favorite moments.”
