CANADIAN COUGARS
Coach: KATHEN FUNBURG
2024 Record: 1-9
OFFENSE
A new era has arrived in Canadian as head coach Kathen Funburg takes over the Cougars and looks to build a strong foundation for the future. With a mix of youth and experience, the Cougars enter 2025 with optimism and grit. “We’re a young and experienced team looking to make our mark on a tough schedule,” said Funburg. “We’ve got a good mixture of speed, size, and strength.”
The Cougar offense will be led by returning quarterback Bryson Buie (6-0, 160, Jr.). “Bryson has the potential to have a solid season statistically,” Funburg said. “He’s a 4.0 student and leader for our program.” The offense will run a spread, up-tempo system designed to spread the ball around and give several playmakers opportunities. “We want to be balanced and give multiple players chances to make plays,” said Funburg.
Those playmakers include senior wide receiver Aiden Haney (5-7, 155, Sr.), and sophomores Tre Perkins (5-9, 160, So.) and Zach King (5-8, 160, So.), who each bring speed and athleticism to the edge. “Tre is super athletic and brings a good combination of strength and speed,” said Funburg. “He’s going to start both ways and be an impact both sides.” Freshman Tyler Beshear (5-8, 180, Fr.) will get early carries at running back. “Tyler will have an immediate impact,” said Funburg. “He won the junior high state powerlifting title in his weight class—he’s got a bright future on the football field.”
Up front, junior Dustin Storm (5-10, 270, Jr.) anchors the offensive line. “Dustin is flexible and strong with a grit and hardworking attitude,” Funburg said.
DEFENSE
The Cougars will feature a multiple-look defense that thrives on speed and aggression. “We’re building our defense around attacking from all focal points,” said Funburg.
Six starters return to a group that includes several two-way players like Buie, Perkins, and Beshear. The mix of athleticism and growing experience should help Canadian compete in every game.
With an energetic first-year head coach and a motivated core of underclassmen, the Canadian Cougars are aiming to turn heads in 2025.
