Talihina’s Ashley McClard – Softball Spotlight – Presented by Pine Cellular

For Ashley McClard, a senior at Talihina High School, softball has become more than just a sport—it’s a way to connect with teammates, overcome challenges, and grow as a person. Starting out on the field wasn’t something Ashley always envisioned for herself. “My friend’s mom put together a team, and they talked me into playing,” she recalled. “At first, I didn’t know if I’d enjoy it, but I ended up falling in love with it.” That decision, made years ago, has shaped her high school career and left a lasting impact on her life.

As a multi-sport athlete who also plays basketball, Ashley values teamwork above all else. This year, her softball team has been thriving on strong chemistry. “I would say my team’s chemistry is amazing,” she said. “We all laugh and joke around until game time. Then, we work really great together as a team.” For Ashley, that bond off the field strengthens their performance on it.

A natural leader, Ashley has embraced her role in guiding her teammates. “I’m more of a leader,” she shared. “I love pumping the team up and also giving advice to help my teammates play better.” She understands the responsibility that comes with her position and works hard to set an example through her dedication and positivity.

Of course, her journey hasn’t been without its challenges. “I got in a hitting slump and felt like I couldn’t get out of it,” Ashley said. “But my teammates and coaches helped me to have a better mindset and better my swing.” That moment of struggle taught her the importance of perseverance and the value of support from others.

Her most memorable moment on the field reflects her drive and determination. “One of my most memorable moments was catching a tough fly ball with a diving play and still managing to get the out at home plate,” she said. Plays like that showcase her skill and dedication to the game.

Looking ahead, Ashley doesn’t plan to continue softball after high school but has clear goals for her future. “I plan to get a good job and eventually buy a house,” she said. While she may not pursue the sport beyond high school, her experiences on the field have shaped her into the person she is today.

As she reflects on her journey, Ashley is most proud of how her team has grown together. “Even with adding new players, we can put our differences aside and come together as a team,” she said. With a deep appreciation for her family, coaches, and teammates, Ashley’s love for the game and her leadership will leave a lasting legacy at Talihina High School.
