Wright City’s Kenlie Zilliox – Cross Country Spotlight – Sponsored by Wright City Cross Country

Kenlie Zilliox’s cross country journey is marked by resilience and dedication, starting from her early fascination with running. “When I was little, I was always interested in running, so when I was 10 in the fourth grade, I started cross country,” Kenlie shared.

Her journey has been significantly influenced by her coaches, Mr. Johnny Crabtree and Mrs. Ruthie (Edna Turner). “What inspired me was my coach Mr. Crabtree; he has always encouraged me through the years in cross country,” Kenlieexplained. Her admiration extends to both coaches, who have been pivotal in her development as a runner.

This year, Kenlie notes the positive team dynamics: “Our team’s chemistry has been great this year. We all have had good attitudes and high expectations for our team this year.” As a key team member, Kenlie strives for excellence: “My role on the team is to do my best to get first place.” Her preparation includes running “at least 10 miles a week” and maintaining a routine of “running three miles every other day.”

Looking forward to the 2024 season, Kenlie is focused on fostering team growth: “My goal for the 2024 season is to push my teammates to better themselves and grow as a team.” Her commitment to this goal is fueled by a desire to make Wright City proud, supported by the community’s significant role. “Community support plays a big role for our team. Some ways are financially and emotionally. Having our community’s support makes me want to be a better runner.”

Kenlie’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. The passing of her father was a particularly tough moment, but running became a way to cope: “My most challenging moment in my cross-country career so far is when my dad passed away. I was focused on running to help take my mind off of losing him.”

Despite these trials, Kenlie has achieved notable success, including placing in the top 10 at the All-Star Jr. High State competition in 2021. Her advice to younger athletes is inspirational: “Never give up and stay focused on being better than you were yesterday.”

In addition to running, Kenlie enjoys reading, fishing, and watching murder mysteries. She expresses gratitude to her mom for her unwavering support and values the guidance of her favorite teacher, Mrs. Rhonda Bishop. “She has helped me a lot throughout the years. She is always there when needed,” Kenlie affirmed.

Kenlie Zilliox’s story is one of perseverance, passion, and a commitment to personal and team growth, making her a standout figure at Wright City High School.
