Broken Bow’s Greydon Howell – Football Spotlight – Presented by James Hodge Dodge of Broken Bow

GREYDON HOWELL

BROKEN BOW HIGH SCHOOL

If you were to look up Webster’s definition of student athlete, you might find a picture of Broken Bow sophomore Greydon Howell. He’s a multi-sport athlete, is in the top 10 percent of his class, is already involved in activities like student council and Spanish Club and plays drums in the band. But his football career has been spotty the past few years as he returns to the gridiron this year to quarterback the Savages.

“I suffered some concussion injuries in seventh grade so that slowed me up a bit then when I got to high school last year, I was unable to find a way to do both band and football so I sat out of football. But coach (Maverick) Lang came in this year and really worked with me to be able to do both,” said Howell who also plays baseball, basketball and track.

He medaled in both the 200- and 400-meter sprints at state last spring which is a reason coach Lang is happy to see him back in football this year.

“Greydon is very athletic and we’ve always got a shot at a big play when he has the ball in his hands,” said Lang. “He medaled twice in track last spring, so he’s got the speed to be a true dual threat.”

But having sat out of football last year puts Howell behind the learning curve in adapting to high school football as he readily admits.

“My biggest challenge is getting used to the speed of it all and having to learn a whole new offense this season with coach Lang and trying to get back to where I was in middle school,” said Howell. “I’m also having to adjust to the wide receivers because at quarterback you really have to learn not only your own position but also the wide receiver’s positions and how they run routes.”

Greydon cites his good friend running back Quinlan Bailey as being a guy that is pushing him this fall.

“We’ve known each other a long time and we’re pretty tight and so if I mess up, he’ll tell me to get back on track along with the whole team and that’s really helped me adjust this year.”
