Gracie Martin’s journey with softball has been a lifelong adventure. “I have played softball for as long as I remember, I don’t remember softball ever not being in my life,” the Kiowa High School senior said. Her softball career began when she was just six years old. “My dad signed us up for t-ball. He coached and I played, it never stopped from there,” she recalled. That early start led her to become the leader she is today, guiding her team through their challenges as the only senior on the field.
Gracie has always found inspiration in softball legends. “When I was little, I always looked up to Jenny Finch. My parents took me to one of her camps and that’s when me learning to pitch started.” Finch’s influence, along with those of pitchers like Paige Parker, Kelly Barnhill, and Delanie Gourley, shaped her approach to the game.
As a leader on a team filled with many first-year varsity players, Gracie embraces the responsibility of fostering team chemistry. “We all get along really well and are pushing each other to do our best. It’s a first varsity season for lots of girls on the team, so everyone is learning and growing together.”
But Gracie’s journey hasn’t been without obstacles. “My most challenging moment so far has been when I broke my leg the beginning of my junior season,” she said. The injury forced her to face the unpredictability of the sport. “Breaking my leg made me realize I have no control in what could happen next.” Now, she approaches every game with a deep sense of appreciation, knowing it could be her last.
Off the field, Gracie values the relationships she’s built throughout her career. “I am most proud of the effort our team has given and the friendships I have built on and off the team.”
And when it comes to support, she holds her favorite teacher, Mrs. Shonna Patterson, in high regard. “She’s always been one to support me and push me to be my best.”
Gracie Martin is determined to make her final season one to remember, soaking in every moment as her time in high school softball winds down.
